The Syntax-Semantics reading group will be meeting on Thursday, February 29th at 1pm in Rm. 117 of the McGill Linguistics department, with a Zoom room open for those unable to join in person.

This week, Zlata will be presenting a talk entitled: ‘Functions of the Ukrainian –sja suffix’. The abstract is below:

In this talk, I will present my ongoing work on the nature of the Ukrainian –sja suffix, variations of which can be seen across the Slavic language family. –sja appears in a number of different environments, which include reflexives/reciprocals, passives, antipassives, and impersonals. I will attempt to reconcile these facts by proposing a unified analysis for these constructions, in which –sja is a Voice head, as well as considering the alternative possibility that –sja is a nominal complement of V.
