McGill lecturer Máire Noonan has returned from Gaza where she attended ICALL1, held October 20-21 at the Islamic University. She presented two papers: “An argument in favour of syntactic decomposition of function words”, as well as an outreach paper co-authored with Lisa Travis entitled “‘Je parle mal, comme mon père’. Why linguistics should be taught in schools.”

While there she traveled as a group with several other linguists, Hagit Borer, David Heap, Stephanie Kelly, Philippe Prévost, Laurie Tuller, as well as Noam Chomsky. The conference also included activist-related events, where the group met with a number of academics, activists, and journalists from Gaza. Máire has been writing a travel blog that recounts (part of) the experience of the visit.
