Abstract:

Theories of person and number agreement encounter interesting problems with respect to conjoined or disjoined subjects (e.g., ‘you and John’ vs. ‘you or John’). The data with respect to conjoined subjects suggests that agreement is not solely reliant on the person and number features of the coordinated DPs. Evidence from disjoined subjects suggests that there is a certain degree of optionality. It is difficult to think of a semantics for conjunction and disjucntion in combination this a syntactic theory of agreement that could account for these facts.
